Most ant species nest outdoor; only a few species nest indoors. However, it is common for them to forage indoors in search of water & food. When the worker ants forage for food, they leave behind a scent trail (pheromones) for other members to find the way to the food source. Most of the time, only a small number of workers are out looking for food as the rest stay in the nest to do cleaning and caring for the nests. Once an existing colony is over-populated, they will move to form a new one.

The common ants found in Singapore are:

1) Ghost ants
2) Crazy ants
3) Fire ants
4) Big-headed ants
5) Carpenter ants
6) Pharaoh ants

Different ants require different solution with no one-size-fits all solution. As nest could be hidden deep in soil or building structures, locating a nest is often challenging. Wrong treatments can trigger nest budding whereby the queens will separate from main nest to establish new nests.

​An integrated approach consisting of sanitation improvements to deny them food & water source, treatment of gel/granule baitings near entry/exit points and residual spraying with non- pyrethroid chemicals at floor/wall skirtings/permeter to form barrier is often needed.
